Alex Iwobi came off the bench in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Rennes on Thursday night, as the Gunners booked their spot in the Europa League quarter-final at the expense of the Ligue Un side, qualifying 4-3 on aggregate.
However, the Nigerian was once again created a social media whirlwind owing to a confrontation between him and Stade Rennais’ Hamari Traore.
The Nigeria international and Mali’ Traore almost got into a scuffle in the heat of the game at the Emirates Stadium with the game already won and lost.
A confrontation from Traore, who had uttered something as both players went head to head, prompted a spontaneous ‘foul breathe’ reaction from the Nigerian, who quickly pulled away holding his nose.
While it may have been just a cheeky reaction to further peeve the Rennais player, reactions on social media are divided as to whether it was a disrespectful gesture from Iwobi or just plain old savage cynicism.
#Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi was rude, disrespectful, unprofessional and filthy. Forget the banter & silly excuses you want to suggest.
Race and colour irrelevant…embarrassingly unacceptable.#Mali’s Hamari Traore is one of the coolest, respectful responsible players in Ligue 1.✊🏿
