Obafemi Martins scored on Friday to give Shanghai Shenhua a first half lead, but it eventually counted for nothing, as whatever hope that brought was quickly snuffed out after Guangzhou Evergrande hit back to snatch a 3-2 win.
Martins hit his second goal of the season in his third appearance for Shanghai Shenhua.
His goal against the Chinese Super League leaders, Guangzhou Evergrande, came in additional time of the first half.
The 32-year-old led a one-man attack for Gus Poyet’s side as record signing, Carlos Tevez continues to be ruled out of action.
Shanghai Shenhua, three-time league winners, are currently seventh on the table, picking ten points after seven matches in the Chinese Super League.
