Former Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin has alleged he missed out on a place to the World Cup in 1994 because the team was selected by then captain Stephen Keshi and he described Coach Clemens Westerhof as a “tool”.
Esin, who came to limelight at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship, was a rising star and had looked a perfect fit for the Eagles but failed to make the cut for Nigeria’s debut appearance at the world cup.
In a interview on Brila Fm, the former Calabar Rovers and Lokeren player blamed the former captain, Keshi, for his Super Eagles troubles despite the intervention of several prominent figures including the then Vice President of Nigeria, Augustus Aikhomu.
“The power behind Westerhof was my captain, late Stephen Keshi. He makes the decision, Westerhof was just a tool [sic].
“All those people that made the ’94 world Cup was Keshi’s decision. If you’re not in his good books to hell with you. [sic]”
