Three-time UEFA Champions League winners, Manchester United crashed out of this season’s Champions League yesterday following a 1-2 home defeat to Sevilla.
Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder’s brace within 4-minutes was enough to end United’s continental campaign this term and condemn United to their first home defeat in Europe since 2013.
Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back for United in the 84th minute but it was only a consolation for Jose Mourinho’s men who now turn to the FA Cup for any hope of silverware this season.
United coach Jose Mourinho after the match defended the team’s abysmal performance and suggested it wasn’t “something new” for United to get knocked out of the Champions League.
Mourinho as quoted –
“It’s not the end of the world. I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and I knock out Man Utd at home, at Old Trafford,” the Man United boss told reporters.
“I sit in this chair with Porto – Man Utd out – I sit in this chair with Real Madrid – Man Utd out… So I don’t think it’s something new for the club. Of course, being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a delusion obviously.”
However, the comments didn’t go down well with many fans of the English giants and they took to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction.
According to Mourinho: It’s not His poor coaching. It’s the culture of the club that pays his wages and let’s him buy all the players he wants but still fail.

I’ve been fully behind Mourinho since he joined us but last night was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He needs to go. The team lacked passion, dedication, and desire last night, that has to come from the manager. He failed on the one stage he was brought in to succeed at.

So the game plan was always to go 2 down and then bring subs on to sneak it in injury time – if that’s the case he is a tactical genius

absolute embarrassment last night. It showed the massive flaw in Jose’s tactics. He is driving your Ferrari like a Fiesta! United had the players and the ability to comfortably win the tie but Jose’s tactics were so negative this result was always on the cards #MUFC
