Egypt’s Amr Fahmy appointed new CAF Secretary General

A new appointee to the vacant CAF Secretary General position has been announced on Thursday by the African football governing body.

The position was previously held by Hisham El Amrani, who resigned in May. Another Egyptian, Essam El-Din Ahmed took over the CAF Secretary General role in an acting capacity.

That was until Thursday when Amr Fahmy was announced the new Secretary General following approval by the Executive Committee (Ex-Com) that was meeting in Rabat, Morocco. President Ahmad Ahmad had proposed Fahmy’s appointed to the Ex-Com.

Fahmy previously worked for the organization between 2007 and 2015. Before his departure in August 2015, the 34-year-old acted as tournament director of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Equatorial Guinea. Fahmy has a FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sports.

He will be assisted by two other new appointees to deputize the new Secretary-General. Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe will oversee football and development while Moroccan Essadik Alaoui will oversee administration and finance of the Africa football governing body.

The Secretary-General is the administrative head of the football governing body, who manages day-to-day affairs of CAF.
