Promise Kept! Super Eagles Dedicate World Cup Ticket to Carl Ikeme

A promise is a debt!? Well, the Super Eagles always pay their debt as it appears, following the win against Zambia and securing a place at next year’s World Cup event.

It took the Super Eagles a 73rd-minute strike off the right boot of 21-year-old forward, Alex Iwobi to settle a nervy contest.

But it was a worthwhile wait and nobody would be happier than the indisposed goalie, Carl Ikeme.

Speaking after Saturday’s victory, Super Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr revealed the team won for the 31-year-old goalkeeper who is undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia.

Rohr said the team promised Ikeme a win and the world cup ticket after a telephone chat on the eve of the game.

‘From day one, our goalkeeper Ikeme (Carl) kept us in this race to qualify for Russia. In Ndola, he made great saves to help us come through with a win.

‘Yesterday (Friday) he spoke with the captain and the whole team and we promised him, we’ll win and qualify.

‘So this win is for Ikeme, this qualification is for our goalkeeper.’ Rohr stressed at the post-match presser.
