Spaniard Rafa Nadal beats South Africa’s Kevin Anderson to win his third US Open.
Rafael Nadal cruised to his third US Open and 16th Grand Slam title with a crushing victory over South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in New York.
The world number one overcame his opponent in three sets, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4 in Sunday’s final at Flushing Meadows.
The 31 year-old Spaniard has now won two Slams in the same year for the first time since 2013 after having won the French Open in June.

Nadal described his year so far as unbelievable given the injuries and lapses in form over the past couple of years.
Roger Federer remains at the top of the men’s all-time Grand Slam list with 19 titles, three ahead of Rafa, who has now won 10 French titles, three US, two Wimbledon and one Australian.
Nadal’s 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win was his fourth in a New York final and his fifth win over Anderson, the sort of shut-out mastery Roger Federer has imposed on other players over the years, and which the Swiss confirmed here before losing to Juan Martín del Potro in the quarters.
That defeat cost New York fans a Nadal-Federer semi-final. At least bits of the old empire remained in place, despite recent upheavals.
