Former Nigeria international, Michael Eneramo has tragically passed away at the age of 40 after collapsing during a local friendly match in Kaduna on Friday morning.
Eneramo had featured throughout the first half of the game but reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, bringing a sudden and heartbreaking end to the life of a respected figure in African football.
He earned ten caps for Nigeria national football team and made his debut in a goalless draw against Jamaica on 11 February 2009.
In his second appearance, he scored his first international goal in a 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland in 2009.
He also featured in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over France in Saint Etienne just days later.
At club level, Eneramo enjoyed a successful career across several countries, representing sides such as Espérance Sportive de Tunis, Beşiktaş, Sivasspor and İstanbul Başakşehir.
Eneramo’s most iconic spell came in Tunisia, where he became a fan favorite and a key figure in one of the club’s most successful eras.

During his time with Espérance, Eneramo won five Tunisian Ligue 1 titles as well as three Tunisian Cups in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
He also reached the pinnacle of African club football by winning the 2018 CAF Champions League.
Admired for his strength and presence, he earned the nickname “the Tank” and was even approached to represent Tunisia internationally, but he chose to remain loyal to Nigeria.

Following news of his passing, Espérance released an emotional statement:
“It is with immense sadness that we learned of the passing of our former Nigerian striker, Michael Eneramo, an iconic figure who forever left his mark on the history of the club. With heavy hearts, the entire “Blood and Gold” family today mourns an exceptional player whose time at Espérance Sportive de Tunis will remain etched in memory. Far more than just a striker, Eneramo embodied values dear to the club: fighting spirit, courage, and unwavering determination. On Tunisian and African pitches alike, he imposed his style, strength, and eye for goal, helping to write some of the most beautiful chapters in the club’s recent history. Supporters will never forget those moments of euphoria when Eneramo found the net at decisive times. His goals, often crucial, carried the team to major victories and made an entire people vibrate. He was one of those players who elevate a team, whose name becomes inseparable from great triumphs. Beyond the player, it is also the man whose absence leaves a huge void. Appreciated for his commitment and attachment to the “Blood and Gold” jersey, Eneramo built a strong bond with supporters and teammates, becoming one of their own, a true son of the club. In these painful moments, Espérance Sportive de Tunis extends its most sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those who had the privilege of crossing his path. We pray that God grants them patience and comfort during this difficult time. Michael Eneramo will forever remain in the memory of Espérance and in the hearts of its supporters.
