FIFA has officially announced the appointment of match officials for the historic FIFA World Cup 2026, confirming a record breaking pool of referees set to oversee the biggest edition of the tournament to date.
A total of 52 referees, 88 assistant referees and 30 video match officials have been selected from across all six confederations and 50 Member Associations.
The selection follows a meticulous process that spanned more than three years.
How Referees were Selected
The FIFA Referees Committee according to its Chairman, Pierluigi Collina ensured the very best officials were picked.

“The selected match officials are the very best in the world. They were part of a wider pool of officials that was identified and monitored over the past three years. They have attended seminars and officiated at FIFA tournaments,” Collina revealed.
“In addition, their performances in domestic and international matches were regularly assessed.
“The selected officials have received, and will continue to receive, comprehensive support from our fitness coaches and medical staff, including physiotherapists and a mental specialist.
“Our goal is to ensure that they’re in optimal physical and mental condition when they arrive in Miami on 31 May.”

Among the notable absentees from the list are Jean-Jacques Ndala and Issa Sy, both of whom officiated high-profile matches at the 2026 AFCON.
The games were in the final and quarter-final of the tournament, and their performances drew scrutiny and sharp criticisms.
Meanwhile, the 2026 World Cup will mark a significant expansion, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across three host countries.
Collina emphasized the scale of the challenge and the readiness of the selected team.
“This year’s FIFA World Cup will be the biggest in history, with a 48 team line up and 104 matches to be contested across the most extensive geographical footprint in the tournament’s history.
“It’ll be the largest FIFA Team One ever, with 41 more match officials than at Qatar 2022. Each of them must be ready to be appointed for a match and to contribute actively to ensuring that the refereeing at the World Cup is a success.
“The fact that six women match officials have been selected continues a trend that was started four years ago in Qatar as we aim to further develop women’s refereeing.”
In preparation for the tournament, all officials will gather in Miami for a ten-day seminar beginning on 31 May.
While there they will undergo intensive training sessions involving local players and receive detailed match analysis support.
Video match officials will later relocate to Dallas, which will host the International Broadcast Centre, while referees and assistant referees will remain in Miami.

Technology is also set to play a central role at the tournament, with goal line technology, an advanced version of semi automated offside technology and connected ball systems all confirmed for use.
In addition, fans will experience a new dimension of the game through referee body cameras, enhanced by artificial intelligence stabilization software to deliver smoother real time footage from the officials’ perspective.
With the list now confirmed, FIFA has set the stage for what promises to be a landmark World Cup, where the world’s top match officials will play a crucial role in delivering a tournament defined by quality and innovation.
