Perennial African champions, Nigeria’s Super Falcons showed the truism that class is permanent as they stormed to a 3-1 victory over the Cameroon women’s national football team in the second of their two-match tour of Yaoundé on Tuesday.
Three days after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first encounter, the 10-time African champions returned to the Military Stadium in northern Yaoundé with renewed intensity, flipping the script in emphatic fashion.
Cameroon struck first again, finding the net in the seventh minute to briefly stir memories of Saturday’s loss, but this time, Nigeria had answers and plenty of them.
Ihezuo and Babajide Spark First-Half Comeback
Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo ignited the comeback in the 32nd minute, rising above her marker to power home a header from a pinpoint cross by Rinsola Babajide.
The Falcons were not done. Just before halftime, Babajide turned scorer.
After a scramble inside the box, the winger who had assisted the equaliser reacted quickest to fire Nigeria into a 2-1 lead in the 43rd minute, completing a swift turnaround before the break.
Michelle Alozie Seals the Win
Super Falcons Head Coach, Justin Madugu made seven changes to the side that lost on Saturday, opting for a more experienced and assertive starting XI.
His tactical tweaks paid dividends.
Nigeria’s reshaped midfield pressed higher, closed central spaces faster, and forced Cameroon into speculative long balls.
In the second half, captain Rasheedat Ajibade was tireless down the right flank.
Her teasing cross in the 64th minute found Michelle Alozie, who attacked the delivery with conviction and launched herself into a flying header to make it 3-1, effectively ending the contest.
Justin Madugu Sets Strong Line-Up
Madugu handed starting roles to Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, alongside
- Osinachi Ohale,
- Folashade Ijamilusi,
- Christy Ucheibe, and
- Rinsola Babajide.
Completing a strong starting XI that combined experience with attacking verve included;
- Jennifer Echegini,
- Oluwatosin Demehin,
- Rasheedat Ajibade,
- Shukurat Oladipo,
- Chinwendu Ihezuo, and
- Michelle Alozie.
The adjustments brought sharper transitions, improved defensive organisation, and greater cutting edge in the final third, responding to Saturday’s shortcomings.
