Former Super Eagles Pius Ikedia and Julius Aghahowa have both praised Ademola Lookman’s move from Atlético Madrid, describing it as the right decision at the right time in his career.
The former internationals believe Lookman needed a fresh start after an unhappy spell in Italy and insist that La Liga’s tactical and technical demands will help him grow into an even better player.
Speaking on Lookman’s transfer, Aghahowa highlighted the winger’s consistency and mentality, while stressing the importance of regular playing time at his new club.
“Yes, I think it’s a good move. I am happy for him. He needed to leave Atalanta you could see he wasn’t happy staying there.

“He needed a fresh start and LaLiga is a perfect league for him. It’s a tactical league where you need speed and dribbling. He can watch other players, improve his skills, and once he does that, he’s going to be a very top player.”
Aghahowa also pointed to Lookman’s impressive performances for Nigeria on the international stage.
“Lookman is a player that has impressed me very much, especially during AFCON 2025. Every time he is called upon, he represents and gives his best.
“Towards the end of his stay at Atalanta he was a bit down, not too happy, but now he has made a very good move.”
“He can feel relieved because he is now at a big club in Europe. He will show the world what he is made of. LaLiga will make him a better player because he loves to show his skills dribble, give assists, and express himself.”
However, the former striker stressed that opportunities on the pitch will be key.
“The most important thing is playing time. When you play week in and week out, you improve and become better. That’s the only thing that can stop him. If he is allowed to play regularly, he will contribute to the success of the team and also the Super Eagles.”

On his part, Pius Ikedia believes the transfer suits Lookman’s style of play, noting that Atlético and LaLiga offer the right environment for his strengths to flourish.
Both former players agree that the move could be a defining moment in Lookman’s career if he settles quickly and earns the trust of his Diego Simeone.
