Nigerian sprint queen, Tobi Amusan has finally gotten her first win of 2025 season, stating that her goal for every race this year is simple: to win, not necessarily to set records.
Amusan, who endured a disappointing outing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, has now begun her bounce-back campaign with renewed purpose.
She clocked a season’s best time of 12.24 seconds, storming past the field to claim victory and set a new meeting record, eclipsing Brianna McNeal’s previous mark of 12.51 seconds.
Speaking after the race, Amusan explained that winning is her top priority, even ahead of setting personal or world records.
“It’s a bit tough going into a race knowing that you’re the best in the field time-wise.”
“You know, it’s not going to be, it sounds so cliché to say, but sometimes it’s not about running fast, but getting the win most importantly at every track, it’s what I look forward to doing.”
“But no, every race is not going to go as planned and I really don’t beat myself up for that.”
Rebuilding After Paris 2024
The 28-year-old hurdles star revealed that the period after her Olympic disappointment had been emotionally challenging, but she is now regaining momentum with the help of her support system.
Amusan, who failed to reach the final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2024 Olympics, had earlier expressed confidence that 2025 would be a year of redemption.
This victory, which is Amusan’s first major win of the year, and potentially the opening chapter of a comeback season, appears to signal the start of that journey.
