Super Eagles Assistant Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu has praised head coach Eric Chelle for including home-based players in the squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.
Speaking ahead of his departure, Ilechukwu highlighted the importance of the move for both the players and the NPFL, calling it a vital step in showcasing local talent to the international football community.
“It’s a good one. I want to extend my greetings to the head coach for making this an opportunity for home-based players to get opportunities in Super Eagles.”
Ilechukwu noted that the exposure could open the door for overseas transfers while boosting the profile of Nigeria’s domestic league.
“It’s going to give the league a big image, also an opportunity for them to get a greener pastoral, you know, playing in so many clubs abroad.”
“We’re happy for that and we expect to see more local players in Super Eagles.”
The Unity Cup offers a platform for NPFL players to stake their claim for future call-ups, as the team begins to build toward World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
