Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka has revealed that he felt disappointed after being dropped from the team’s for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
On loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg, Onyeka was initially included in Nigeria’s 39-man provisional squad.
However, he failed to make the final cut released by the head coach, much to his dismay.
“I was quite sad about it,” Onyeka admitted in an interview with OmaSports TV. “But again, the coach knows best. He knows what players he wants to use but hopefully, in the next games I’ll be available, I’m always available and hopefully, I’ll be with the team.”
The Super Eagles went on to defeat Rwanda 2-0 in Kigali and drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe in Uyo during those qualifiers.
Despite those results, Nigeria sits fourth in Group C with seven points, six behind group leaders South Africa after six matches.
Looking ahead to the rest of the qualifiers, Onyeka remains optimistic. “I know we are in a difficult situation but there’s still a chance for us, we just need to win our next four games and hopefully we can qualify,” he said.
The Super Eagles’ next fixtures include a home tie against Rwanda on August 31 and a tough away trip to South Africa on September 7.
Before then, Onyeka may return to the squad for the 2025 Unity Cup in May, which will be held at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, and a friendly match against Russia scheduled for June.
Onyeka has been a regular feature for Augsburg this season, making 28 Bundesliga appearances and providing two assists.
His consistent performances have made him a key figure in midfield, helping the German side sit comfortably in 11th place.
