Inter Miami superstar, Lionel Messi will no longer have his bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, protecting him from the touchline during Major League Soccer (MLS) matches, after the league took full control of matchday security.
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, gained widespread attention for his vigilant presence around Messi, regularly intercepting pitch invaders who attempted to get close to the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
However, MLS has now restricted his access to only the locker room and mixed zones on matchdays.
“They Won’t Let Me Help Messi” – Cheuko Responds
Reacting to the decision, Cheuko expressed his frustration, arguing that security at MLS games remains a major concern.
“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” he told Spanish media.
“I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch.”
“I came to the USA and in just 20 months, 16 people have already done so. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
Despite the restriction, Cheuko confirmed that he will continue working as Messi’s personal bodyguard outside of stadiums.
Why MLS Made the Decision

MLS officials have decided to take full control of matchday security, ensuring a standardized approach across all stadiums.
The decision comes after multiple high-profile pitch invasions, with Cheuko seen physically intervening on several occasions to protect Messi.
While Inter Miami had previously allowed him to operate on the touchline, the league’s new directive means that responsibility will now fall entirely on MLS security teams.
Messi’s Security Challenges in the U.S.
Messi’s arrival in Major League Soccer has drawn unprecedented attention, with crowds often surging towards the Argentine legend both on and off the field.
In September 2023, Cheuko was seen sprinting across the pitch to stop a fan attempting to hug Messi during a game.
Similar incidents have occurred multiple times since, highlighting concerns about inadequate security measures at MLS venues.
