Victor Osimhen stole the spotlight in Kigali, scoring twice to lead Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The win marks Nigeria’s first-ever triumph on Rwandan soil after three previous draws, reigniting their qualification hopes.
Osimhen Makes History
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 11th minute, converting Ademola Lookman’s well-delivered free kick to notch his 24th goal for the national team.
That strike saw him surpass Odegbami’s long-standing tally of 23 goals.

The Galatasaray star wasn’t done yet, doubling Nigeria’s lead just before halftime with a composed finish, securing all three points for the Super Eagles.
His brace moved him to 25 international goals, making him Nigeria’s second-highest all-time scorer; just 12 goals shy of the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37.
Nigeria’s All-Time Top Scorers
1. Rashidi Yekini – 37 goals
2. Victor Osimhen – 25 goals
3. Segun Odegbami – 23 goals
4. Yakubu Aiyegbeni – 21 goals
5. Ikechukwu Uche – 19 goals
6. Obafemi Martins – 18 goals
7. Sunday Oyarekha – 17 goals
8. Samson Siasia – 16 goals
9. Odion Ighalo – 16 goals
10. Ahmed Musa – 16 goals
At just 25, Osimhen is on track to break Yekini’s record if he maintains his goal-scoring form.
Tactical Intelligence and Renewed Belief
Chelle’s men approached the game with a sense of urgency, pressing Rwanda high and refusing to sit deep after taking the lead.
The attacking trio of Osimhen, Lookman, and Moses Simon tormented the Rwandan defense, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi controlled the midfield with composure.
Newcomer Tolu Arokodare also made his Super Eagles debut, replacing Osimhen in the 77th minute.
Qualification Hopes Back on Track
The victory lifts Nigeria to fourth place in Group C with six points, keeping their World Cup dream alive. Next, Osimhen and his teammates will take on Zimbabwe in Uyo, with momentum firmly on their side.
If Chelle’s side can maintain this level of intensity, back-to-back wins could set them on course for a dramatic turnaround in their qualification campaign.
