Chidera Ejuke marked his first La Liga start in 140 days with a decisive goal as Sevilla secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena on Sunday.
The Nigerian winger, who has struggled for minutes since returning from injury in January, finally got the nod from head coach García Pimienta, replacing Ruben Vargas in the starting lineup. And he repaid that faith in style.
After a cagey first half with neither side able to break the deadlock, Sevilla capitalized on a lapse in concentration from Sociedad immediately after the restart.
Ejuke received the ball on the edge of the box and, with a swift touch to set himself up, curled a stunning effort past Unai Marrero in the 46th minute to put Sevilla ahead.
The goal was Ejuke’s second of the La Liga season and his third goal contribution in 17 league appearances, having also registered one assist.
Despite Sociedad’s attempts to mount a comeback, they struggled to create clear-cut chances against Sevilla’s resolute defense.
Ejuke continued to be a lively presence before being substituted in the final 20 minutes, with Juanlu Sánchez coming on to help see out the win.

Ejuke’s return to form is a significant boost after an injury-ridden campaign.
The Nigerian international suffered a hamstring injury in Sevilla’s 5-1 loss to Barcelona last October, which sidelined him for nine league games.
Before the setback, he had established himself as an important part of Pimienta’s squad, scoring once in his first nine appearances.
His latest performance will undoubtedly strengthen his case for more starts as Sevilla battle to climb the La Liga table.
