As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, coach Eric Sekou Chelle has called on former players to help motivate the team.
Nigeria is in a precarious position, needing victories in both matches to revive their qualification hopes.
Chelle was appointed on January 8 to replace Augustine Eguavoen and face the daunting task of rescuing Nigeria’s World Cup campaign.
If the Super Eagles fail to win both matches, their chances of qualification will be virtually extinguished.
Nigeria’s hope of reaching the tournament, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is hanging by a thread after a disastrous start to their qualifying campaign.
Super Eagles have failed to win any of their opening four matches, drawing against Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa while suffering a damaging defeat to Benin Republic.
Currently, fifth in the standings Nigeria could potentially miss out on a second successive World Cup.
In an interview with MainlandMetro, Chelle confirmed moves made to gear up support for his team.
“I have invited Nigerian legends to join us in this battle, and I’m happy that they have accepted,” Chelle said.
“I want to assure Nigerians that we are going to have a good preparation for the matches, and we will do whatever it takes to get back on track.”
With only the group winners securing an automatic World Cup ticket, Nigeria faces an uphill task in their remaining six fixtures.
Among the Super Eagles legends expected to lend their support are Nwankwo Kanu and one-time Bolton Wanderers captain Austin Okocha.
Others include former Chelsea star Mikel Obi and ex-Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, whose experience and leadership could provide a morale boost.
Winning all six remaining matches is the only way for Nigeria to keep their World Cup dream alive.
However, with pressure mounting, Chelle’s decision to bring in national legends could be the inspiration the team desperately needs
