Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has provided an encouraging update on Taiwo Awoniyi’s condition after the Super Eagles forward suffered an injury during their victory over Exeter City on Tuesday.
The Nigerian striker, who has struggled for regular game time with Chris Wood preferred in attack, made the most of his FA Cup opportunity.
Unfortunately, he was stretchered off in stoppage time after a heavy collision with Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth, raising concerns over his fitness.
However, Santo has reassured fans that the striker is in good spirits despite the setback.
A Mixed Night for Awoniyi
Awoniyi scored Forest’s second goal of the game before the break.
In the 37th minute, Ibrahim Sangaré found him on the edge of the box, and Awoniyi responded with a thunderous strike to extend Forest’s lead.
However, his night was cut short after suffering a broken nose from a clash with Whitworth.
Despite the injury, Santo praised Awoniyi’s impact, highlighting his determination and quality.
Manager’s Update on Awoniyi’s Condition
Speaking after the match, the Forest boss downplayed concerns over the severity of the injury, confirming that Awoniyi was assessed and cleared to travel with the team.
“It was a concussion, and I think he broke his nose,” Nuno told Nottingham Post. “He is in a lot of pain but has a smile on his face because he did an amazing job and scored for us. He has already been checked and is OK to travel.”
The 27-year-old has found minutes hard to come by this season, with Chris Wood cementing his place as Forest’s first-choice striker.
Awoniyi has made 21 appearances across all competitions but has started just four games, scoring twice.
Earlier in the January transfer window, he was linked with a move away from the City Ground in search of more playing time, but no deal materialized.
With his latest performance and goal, Awoniyi will be hoping for more opportunities once he recovers from his injury.
