Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has opened up on his decision to join Middlesbrough during the January transfer window, citing the club’s ambition and the influence of manager Michael Carrick.
The 28-year-old striker made the switch from Sevilla on loan after a challenging six-month spell in Spain, following an 11-year stay in England with Manchester City and Leicester City.
Why Iheanacho Chose Middlesbrough

Iheanacho expressed excitement about the move, highlighting Middlesbrough’s strong setup and Premier League aspirations.
“There are good coaches here and a good team. I’ve played against the club a good few times so I know it’s a really good club,” Iheanacho told Teesside Live.
“I spoke to the manager and he was a nice guy. We discussed everything from training to games and how he wants the club to move forward.
It was clear that the goal was to get to the Premier League, which was good. I can’t wait to get started.”
Reflecting on his short stint in Spain, Iheanacho acknowledged the experience but emphasized his focus on making an impact at Boro.
“It was good to move away and experience a different environment. They produce a great atmosphere there and it’s another great club. I loved my experience there, it’s a great team. I’m here now though, and focused on what I can achieve here.”
Familiar Territory in England

Having played in the Championship last season with Leicester City, Iheanacho believes his experience will help him settle in quickly.
“England feels like home now and I’m buzzing to get started. I had the experience of the Championship with Leicester last season and it was a good one.
I played against Middlesbrough as well, but didn’t manage to score! But I’ve played in the league and know how it is.”
While he is not one to set personal targets, Iheanacho is fully committed to helping the team achieve promotion.
“I think that will help me get started right away. I’m feeling ready to go.
I’m not big on setting targets, but collectively, as a team, it is to get back to the Premier League. Obviously, it’s one step at a time, but hopefully we get there.
We’ve got a good group of lads here, a good team, and hopefully, we can work together to achieve that goal.”
Carrick Excited for Iheanacho’s Debut

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has been impressed with Iheanacho’s attitude and eagerness to contribute.
“He’s desperate to play. He has a fantastic personality and has been great since he has been here. He has trained brilliantly with the boys and has been desperate to get started. Kel has excellent experience and pedigree,” Carrick said.
Iheanacho could make his debut for Middlesbrough this evening when they face Sheffield United in the EFL Championship.
