The President of the Nigerian Fencing Federation, Samuel Adeyinka, has provided an update on young fencer, Wisdom Okanlawon, confirming that the teenager has been selected as one of Africa’s five representatives for a high-performance training camp in China this April.
Adeyinka explained that the camp is organized ahead of the Junior Cadet World Championships, giving selected athletes an opportunity to train and compete with peers from across the globe.
“It’s a training camp that they select athletes from certain African countries, five slots, and then they put your athlete forward, so they contact us, we put in athletes that are doing well and that we want to represent us.”
“So typically it is a camp that is held prior to the world championships, the Junior Cadet World Championships, so for this particular one we then, for a week, train in camp, and then from there we train with athletes from other countries, so there are five athletes from five different countries.”
With Wisdom Okanlawon ‘s selection, Nigeria’s presence in international fencing is growing visible, with the training camp set to further develop his skills ahead of global competitions.
