The National Sports Commission’s Elite Athlete and Podium Board has been inaugurated, with a mandate to identify Nigeria’s priority sports and provide support for enhanced performance.
The National Sports Commission DG, Bukola Olopade, outlined the board’s objectives. He stated that the board will conduct feasibility studies for high-performance and athlete development centers.
Meanwhile, the NSC board will also recommend appropriate professionals and remuneration structures.
Commonwealth Games Preparations Take Center Stage
The CEO of the Elite Athlete and Podium Board, Yusuf Ali, confirmed that the first major task of the board will be ensuring Nigeria has a strong showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“As a committee, or as a board, we have a patron area who are going to take some sports priority and other sports will follow.”

With key international competitions lined up Nigeria’s sports authorities are setting a strategic roadmap to maximize podium finishes.
The Elite Athlete and Podium Board is expected to spearhead reforms, streamline resources, and ensure Athletes receive the best possible preparation for these global events.
