Never one to shy away from voicing his opinions, Gerard Pique revealed during Saturday’s press conference what went on behind the scenes as Neymar secured a transfer away from Barcelona and he didn’t hold back when it came to discussing the role of the club board.
Spanish Defender, Gerard Pique on saturday revealed that some of the players knew about the Brazilian’s wantaway wishes, but suggested that the club’s directive were slow to realise there was a serious possibility of a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
“I don’t know if the club knew,” he said, when asked if they should have taken more action.
“I knew because it had been communicated to me and to several players, but I don’t know if the president or the technical secretary knew about it.
“It wasn’t our role to communicate it [to the club].”We are footballers and are here to play football.
“Another subtle message for the board came when he talked about the payments made to Neymar’s father.
“If his father is given a commission then it’s because there are clubs who want to keep a hold of Neymar’s talents and the father earns a commission in negotiations because the club has permitted it,” the defender said.
Pique also revealed that his tweet insisting that the player would stay was made when he already knew that Neymar was going to leave.
