Former Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum has sent his congratulatory message and is delighted at being part of the success story of Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun, who recently signed her first professional contract with National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Washington Spirit.
Abiodun, 19, joins the 2021 NWSL champions on a three-year deal following an impressive two-year collegiate career at the University of Pittsburgh. Waldrum, instrumental in her move to the U.S., congratulated the player on her achievement.
“Congratulations Deborah, what a journey this has been for you! Happy to have played a small part,” Waldrum said.
Waldrum previously shared how Abiodun approached him after her stellar display at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which earned her a full scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh.
“Deb came to me and said, ‘Will you take me to your school? I want to go to college, and I want to get an education,’” Waldrum revealed.
At Pittsburgh, Abiodun scored 10 goals and provided three assists in 34 appearances, earning All-ACC honors in both seasons, including Freshman Team and Third Team recognition in 2023 and Second Team accolades in 2024.
Abiodun, who represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics, is thrilled about the next chapter of her career.
“I’m beyond thrilled to take this next step in my career by joining Washington Spirit,” she said via the club’s website.
“This isn’t just a dream; it’s a purpose I’ve poured my heart and soul into. I am ready to give everything I have to the game I love, especially with a team that cares about its players’ growth and development.”
Abiodun becomes the fourth Nigerian to play for Washington Spirit, following in the footsteps of Josephine Chukwunonye, Francisca Ordega, and Ngozi Okobi.
