Mohamed Salah is rewriting history yet again, as he becomes the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for both goals and assists before Christmas.
The Egypt forward delivered an unforgettable performance in Liverpool’s 6-3 triumph over Tottenham on Sunday, scoring twice and assisting twice to further cement his legacy.
With 15 goals to his name so far this season, Salah is currently the Premier League’s top scorer, ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who has 13.
This stellar performance continues Salah’s remarkable run in the league, having won the Golden Boot three times in the past—once in 2017-18 and twice as a joint winner in 2018-19 and 2021-22.
Speaking on his milestone, Salah admitted, “I didn’t think about it before the game, to be fair. But it’s something that makes me happy and proud. I just keep working hard.”
Despite his individual success, Salah’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. When asked about any update on his situation, Salah simply responded, “No.”
Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, was full of praise for his team’s attacking play, though he expressed some relief when the sixth goal was scored to seal the win and quash Tottenham’s brief hopes of a comeback.
“Until 60-65 minutes [in] I really, really, really enjoyed what I saw,” Slot said. “But then you also saw that, no matter how much quality players have, they think they don’t have to run anymore.”
“In this league, especially against Tottenham because they are so good with the ball as well, they immediately start to create.”
“And that’s what they did, and they scored two goals. I was happy that the sixth one went in, to be fair.”
While the attacking display was exhilarating, Salah admitted there were areas to improve.
“We were quite good up front, but defensively we need to improve as a team,” he said. “It’s quite good the result, and hopefully we just keep going.”
As Liverpool head into the busy festive period sitting atop the Premier League, Salah’s continued brilliance ensures that if this is indeed his final season with the club, he’s certainly going out with a bang.
