In a recent Copa de la Reina Round of 16 clash, Nigeria’s Gift Monday found the back of the net for Costa Adeje Tenerife, but it wasn’t enough as they were comprehensively beaten 6-2 by FC Barcelona.
The match, which marked the final game of the year for both teams, saw Barcelona take control early, leading 2-0 within the first 23 minutes.
The Spanish giants opened the scoring through Irene Paredes, who powered home a header from a corner kick.
Just moments later, Ewa Pajor doubled Barcelona’s lead with a clinical left-footed strike from inside the box.
However, Tenerife mounted an impressive comeback before halftime. Gift Monday sparked the revival in the 41st minute, finding the net to halve the deficit.
Just before the break, Aleksandra Zaremba added a second goal for the hosts, ensuring the first half ended 2-2.
The second half, however, was all Barcelona. Alexia Putellas restored the lead for the Catalan side in the 65th minute with a cool penalty, followed by Pajor’s second goal of the game after another foul in the box.
Pajor completed her hat-trick in injury time, while Putellas also added her second goal in the 87th minute to seal the dominant 6-2 victory for Barcelona.
Gift Monday, who had been lively throughout the match, was replaced by Moroccan Sakina Ouzraoui Diki in the 58th minute.
Monday has been in fine form this season, having scored four goals in the league and two in Copa de la Reina matches.
Her compatriot, Rinsola Babajide, also made way for Koko in the 73rd minute.
Costa Adeje Tenerife will look to regroup as they prepare for their next challenge against Deportivo La Coruna on January 11, 2025, as they start their campaign for the new year.
