Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has criticized Moroccan fans for their lack of support for Ademola Lookman after he was crowned CAF Player of the Year.

Footage from the event showed Moroccan fans leaving the ceremony hall immediately after Lookman was announced as the winner of the prestigious award.

Ikpeba expressed his disappointment, accusing the Moroccans of being “sore losers” because their compatriot, Achraf Hakimi, failed to clinch the honor.

He contrasted their behavior with that of Senegalese fans, who celebrated Mohamed Salah’s victory when the event was held in Senegal, despite their own player not winning.

Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, Ikpeba remarked:

“They shouldn’t take the event to Morocco again. It’s not fair. We’ve seen awards like the Ballon d’Or and others, and it’s not like this. Someone has to always win.”

Ikpeba also commended those who voted for Lookman, stating:

“Those who voted for Lookman did it with class and were very honest in their selection process.”

Lookman’s triumph was no surprise, given his remarkable consistency throughout 2024. The award was a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding performances for both club and country.

The Atalanta forward, who succeeded Victor Osimhen as African Player of the Year, has earned widespread praise for his contributions to Nigerian football and his club.
