Former Nigerian international Ifeanyi Udeze has expressed disappointment over Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong’s exclusion from the Africa Best XI, despite his stellar performances and MVP win at the 2024 AFCON.
Troost-Ekong had an exceptional tournament in February, leading Nigeria with solid defensive displays and scoring three crucial goals.
His leadership and consistency on the pitch earned him the prestigious MVP award, solidifying his role as a key figure for the Super Eagles.
However, his omission from the Africa Best XI has sparked debate, particularly after he was also nominated for the CAF Player of the Year award but failed to make the final shortlist of five.
Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred, Udeze criticized the decision, calling it a major oversight.
“Troost Ekong is the AFCON MVP, why isn’t he on the Africa best XI?
He doesn’t need a vote, his place should be automatic.,” Udeze said.
While Troost-Ekong missed out, two Nigerian players, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, were included in the prestigious lineup.
The Africa Best XI includes:
Goalkeeper: Andre Onana
Defenders: Achraf Hakimi, Kalidou Koulibaly, Chancel Mbemba
Midfielders: Mohamed Kudus, Sofyan Amrabat, Franck Kessié, Yves Bissouma
Forwards: Mohamed Salah, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman
Troost-Ekong’s exclusion has reignited discussions about the selection criteria for such awards, with many fans and analysts agreeing with Udeze’s stance that the AFCON MVP should have been a guaranteed pick.
