West Ham United striker Michail Antonio was involved in a serious car accident on Saturday, leaving him trapped in his vehicle for almost an hour before emergency crews could free him.
The 34-year-old is now in stable condition and conscious after being rushed to a central London hospital.
According to a statement from the Premier League club, “Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.”
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon on High Road, Epping, in Essex, when Antonio’s Ferrari crashed.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews arrived at 1:02 p.m., finding the player trapped inside his car. By 1:45 p.m., they had freed him, and he was taken into the care of paramedics.
A statement from Essex Police confirmed the crash involved a Ferrari, with authorities now investigating the cause. “Officers investigating a serious collision in Epping are asking for witnesses and dash cam footage,” said the police.
The player has been a key figure for West Ham this season, appearing in all 14 Premier League fixtures, and is the club’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer with 68 goals in 268 appearances.
West Ham is set to play Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, though Antonio’s involvement remains uncertain.
