Former national team assistant coach Fatai Amoo has asserted that playing the first leg of the CHAN qualifier away is not a disadvantage for Nigeria.
He emphasized that the outcome of the doubleheader against Ghana will largely depend on the team’s level of preparation and their ability to seize opportunities.
In an interview with Brila.net, Amoo addressed concerns about the CHAN Eagles facing their first game in Accra, stating,
“It’s not a disadvantage. The outcome will depend on your preparation. Whether you are playing away first or at home, it comes down to how well you can maximize your opportunities. If you do that effectively, you are good to go.”
Discussing the upcoming match and Nigeria’s chances, Amoo remarked, “It’s going to be 50-50, but we’ve started preparations.
With the coaching staff working alongside Augustine Eguavoen, we have a good chance of achieving positive results.”
He expressed confidence in the player selections, noting, “The selections of the players are good, but the results will ultimately tell if there is anything to add or subtract.”
The first leg of the qualifier is set for Sunday, December 22, in Accra, with the return leg scheduled for Saturday, December 28, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The CHAN tournament, which features players from domestic leagues, will hold its eighth edition in February 2025 across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Nigeria faces a challenging Ghanaian side that has historically thwarted their chances for CHAN finals, including heartbreaks in 2009 and 2023.
In their most recent encounter, both nations ended tied after two legs, with Ghana advancing on penalties in Abuja following 2-0 wins at each team’s home ground.
