After Feyenoord 3-3 UCL draw on Tuesday night, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologized after a comment he made regarding scratches on his face sparked backlash, with some interpreting his words as making light of self-harm.
The controversy unfolded after City’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Guardiola, appearing with visible scratches on his forehead, was asked about the marks during his post-match news conference.
In a light-hearted moment, Guardiola mimicked scratching his nose and said, “With my finger, my nail.” However, he then added, “I want to harm myself,” before laughing and quickly exiting the room.
The remark raised eyebrows, leading to concerns about its insensitivity to those struggling with mental health issues.
Guardiola later addressed the incident through a statement on his official social media accounts, explaining that his comment was not intended to trivialize self-harm.
“I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this,” the statement read.
“My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.”
The statement continued: “I know many people struggle with mental health issues every day,” before referencing the Samaritans charity as a resource for those seeking help.
While the draw against Feyenoord ended a five-game losing streak for City, the team’s struggles continue.
Guardiola’s side has not won since their 1-0 victory over Southampton on October 26.
City remains in second place in the Premier League, but they are eight points behind leaders Liverpool, whom they face at Anfield this Sunday.
