Former Manchester United youth coach Jonathan Hill has officially declared his interest in becoming the next head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
Hill, 54, is a seasoned assistant manager and youth coach, with notable stints at Manchester United and Fulham.
His only senior coaching experience came during a 40-game spell with Norwegian side Tromsdalen.
The Super Eagles’ coaching position is once again in the spotlight following Nigeria’s successful qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The three-time African champions have been without a permanent head coach since Finidi George’s departure in June.
Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen led the team through AFCON qualification, securing top spot in their group with 11 points. However, the Nigeria Football Federation is reportedly seeking a new technical team to guide the squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The NFF remains open to appointing a foreign tactician, and Hill has thrown his hat into the ring.
His only international experience comes from his time as academy manager for the Jordan FA, but he is excited by the challenge of leading Nigeria.
Speaking on Sports Boom, Hill shared his enthusiasm for the role.
“This is a role I truly fancy because of its demanding nature and the likelihood it brings to push one to do their best”
He further emphasized his interest in Nigeria’s vast talent pool: “It’s a great, untapped talent pool. I enjoy the cultural and sporting experiences, and I know I do well with them.
And the profile it offers, you know. It’s a highly contested role, but with my strong resume, you might wonder why I’m not working at present. It’s a mystery.”
When asked about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup, Hill expressed confidence stating,
“You have to applaud the work already being done by Augustine and his crew. Qualification for the World Cup is definitely something that can be achieved as well.”
The NFF’s search for a new coach continues, and Hill’s candidacy adds an intriguing option to the mix as Nigeria prepares for a critical phase in its football journey.
