Nigeria’s Glory Edet and club side, TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo are the new champions of the CAF Women’s Champions League after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Morocco’s AS FAR in the final played at Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida on Saturday.
Edet made history by becoming the first Nigerian player to win the CAF Women’s Champions League with a team outside of Nigeria.
However, this achievement comes in a twist as as she played no part in the final due to a knee injury sustained during TP Mazembe’s opening match against South Africa’s University of the Western Cape on November 9.
Mazembe, who were eliminated in the group stages of the 2022 tournament, came prepared to claim their first continental title.
The match’s only goal came early in the first half, when Marlene Kasaj converted a penalty in the 10th minute, a lead Mazembe would protect for the remainder of the match.
The hosts struggled to break down Mazembe’s well-organized defense. AS FAR’s efforts to equalize were thwarted time and again, with Mazembe’s defenders standing firm under pressure.
In the second half, Mazembe looked dangerous on the counter, even as AS FAR intensified their attack, but the DR Congo side held strong to secure the victory.
Glory Edet, who has since undergone surgery, now adds a second CAF Women’s Champions League medal to her collection.
She previously earned a bronze medal with Bayelsa Queens in 2022, where she made history as the only Nigerian named to the Team of the Tournament.
TP Mazembe’s journey to glory included a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory over Nigeria’s Edo Queens in the semi-finals, cementing their place in the final and ultimately securing the title.
With the win, The Congolese Side club side not only lifted the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League trophy but also earned $600,000 in prize money. AS FAR, who were hoping to win a second continental title, took home $400,000 as runners-up.
