Nigerian table tennis star, Offiong Edem has announced her retirement from international competition, ending a successful career that spanned two decades.
The 37 year-old announced, Thursday, her decision to step away from the national team and will now shift her focus to mentoring the next generation of table tennis players.
“I bid farewell to the national team. It’s time to explore new horizons and nurture young table tennis talents, inspiring the next generation to surpass my achievements.”
Edem, who hails from Cross River State, has been one of Nigeria’s most accomplished and recognizable athletes.
She represented Nigeria in multiple Olympic Games, including Athens 2004, London 2012, and Tokyo 2020.
Over the years, she built a reputation as one of Africa’s top female table tennis players, with her highest world ranking reaching 89.
Throughout her career, Edem has been a key figure in Nigeria’s dominance in African, winning gold at the African Championships and played an integral role in the country’s success in team events at the African Games and Commonwealth Games.
Her consistent performances helped elevate Nigeria’s standing on the global table tennis stage.
In her farewell message, Edem expressed deep gratitude for the support she received throughout her career.
“I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who’s supported me on this incredible journey: family, friends, and well-wishers. Your love and encouragement have meant the world to me.”
Edem’s journey from humble beginnings in Bayside to global recognition has made her a role model for many aspiring athletes.
“I remain committed to the table tennis community, empowering young stars. Thank you all for your support. Peace and love,” she concluded.
