Super Falcons forward, Ifeoma Onumonu delivered another winning performance for Montpellier, scoring the only goal in their 1-0 victory over FC Nantes in France’s Division 1 Féminine.
The Nigerian striker’s clinical finish in the 70th minute was enough to secure all three points for the hosts, as they climbed to sixth in the league standings.
Onumonu, who moved to Montpellier from Gotham FC in the United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) earlier this year, was expertly set up by midfielder Lea Khelifi.
The 29-year-old’s precise strike found the back of the net, bringing her total goals of the season to four (4) and one assist in seven league appearances.
The win moves Montpellier to 13 points after eight games, a solid mid-table position.
She was substituted in the 89th minute for Cameroon’s Nina Ngueleu, but by that time, the victory was well within reach.
For Onumonu, who is also a key player for Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, this goal continues a streak of strong performances both at club and international level.
Onumonu is a key player of the Nigeria’s senior national team, Super Falcons. She represented Nigeria in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
She was recently named to the Nigerian squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Montpellier’s next challenge will be against Saint Etienne on November 23, 2024.
