The Nigerian football community is mourning the loss of Gift Atulewa, a respected member of the 2005 U-20 Flying Eagles squad, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 38.

The former Warri Wolves and Bayelsa United player had reportedly been battling health issues related to high blood pressure before succumbing to complications from hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) disease.

Atulewa was a standout in Nigeria’s U-20 team that represented the country at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands.

The Flying Eagles had a memorable run in that tournament, reaching the final before falling to a Lionel Messi-led Argentina.

During the competition, Atulewa made three appearances, contributing to the team’s impressive performance.

He played alongside notable talents such as John Obi Mikel and Taiye Taiwo, who were instrumental in the squad’s success.

Tragically, Atulewa’s passing marks the third death among the 2005 Flying Eagles team, following the untimely losses of Olufemi Adebayo and team captain Isaac Promise.
