Names like Sadiq Umar, who has yet to score this season, and Kelechi Iheanacho, who is still finding his rhythm with Sevilla, have particularly drawn attention.

Super Eagles: Allow Eguavoen Pick His Players – Okunnowo

Former Super Eagles defender, Gbenga Okunowo has weighed in on the public debate surrounding the latest Super Eagles squad selection, stressing that while fans may have their opinions, what truly matters is the coach’s strategy.

Since Augustine Eguavoen released his squad list for Nigeria’s final two AFCON qualifying matches, fans have been quick to question the inclusion of some players.

Names like Sadiq Umar, who has yet to score this season, and Kelechi Iheanacho, who is still finding his rhythm with Sevilla, have particularly drawn attention.

In an interview on Brila FM’s “No Holds Barred”, Okunowo emphasized the importance of letting the head coach execute his plan. He also highlighted discipline as a key factor.

“It’s African mentality. It is free to talk and people will always talk but only the coach knows what he wants,” Okunowo said. “If he wins with the squad nobody will complain, so let Eguavoen do his job.”

He went on to note that criticism isn’t exclusive to Africa.

“People talk in Europe, too. If the players are performing well, they praise them; if not, they blame the coach.”

Okunowo also underlined the importance of discipline and punctuality in the team:

“The most important thing is discipline and arriving in camp on time. African teams should be scared of us; when we’re coming, they should be shaking.”

Nigeria, currently at the top of their qualifying group with 10 points, needs just a single point from their final two games to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
