In response to growing concerns of its Citizens safety, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reassured Nigerians in Libya.

Libyan media platforms including Libya News Today 1 and Libya INF.TV, have been vocal using xenophobic slurs as they urge authorities to take strict measures against undocumented Nigerian workers in the Country.

The outlets are reacting to CAF’s verdict against the LFF over a botched AFCON qualifier against Nigeria.

“The fine that Libya is demanded to pay will be paid by Nigerian citizens who live in Libya. We have been subjected to injustice,” one of the messages reads.

“We have no borders with Nigeria. What benefit are they to us? They’re a burden on the Libyan people. They have to go back home.”

There are reported mass campaign of xenophobic nature against Nigerians in Libya.

CAF’s disciplinary board awarded Nigeria three points and three goals, as well as imposed a $50,000 fine on the LFF.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since issued a statement, reassuring Nigerians that the situation remains calm.

“As of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football, which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya for a Nations Cup qualifying match,” the Ministry clarified.

The Ministry further emphasized its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, stating “The well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and [we] will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times.”
