From First Choice to Backup: Maduka Okoye Wants Super Eagles Spot Back

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye says he’s patiently waiting for a chance to reclaim his spot in Nigeria’s national team.

Despite being the only Nigerian goalkeeper currently playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues, Okoye remains second choice for the Super Eagles.

Okoye, once Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, lost his position after stepping away from international duties for a year following intense criticism from fans.

In his absence, Stanley Nwabali seized the opportunity, becoming the team’s new number one.

Nwabali has since impressed with strong performances, particularly during AFCON in January.

Now back in the squad and delivering solid performances for Udinese in Serie A, Okoye is eager to make a return but remains behind Nwabali in the pecking order.

Reflecting on his situation, the former Watford shot-stopper said:

“Of course, this is what I want, but I understand that Stanley set a high bar, especially with his performances at AFCON.

“I’m patiently waiting, focusing on training, and doing my best to impress the coaches.” He told Football Temple.
