Exclusive: Why I Left Brentford for Germany on Deadline Day – Onyeka

Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka has revealed the reasons behind his last-minute decision to join Bundesliga side FC Augsburg on loan from Brentford, a move that surprised many on the final day of the transfer window.

Onyeka, who joined Brentford in the 2021/22 season, spent three seasons at the club, making 78 appearances, scoring once, and providing four assists.

Despite his contributions, his future at the English Premier League side took an unexpected turn late in the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Brila Media, Onyeka—nicknamed “The Tank” explained that a lack of clarity from Brentford’s head coach regarding his role in the team led him to seek opportunities elsewhere.

“I spoke to the coach and everyone at the club,” Onyeka said. “I asked the coach about his plans for me, and he said I would play, but for me, I needed to start games consistently. That’s why I took the decision to move to Germany.”

According to Onyeka, the coach’s plan to rotate him in and out of the starting lineup wasn’t enough to satisfy his desire for regular first-team football.

“He said he would start me in some games and mix it up, but I needed to be in the starting XI,” he added.

Since joining Augsburg, Onyeka has already featured in seven matches, providing one assist.

His new team currently sits 13th in the Bundesliga table.
