History Made in Africa’s Largest Stadium, But It’s Not Even Football

The FNB Stadium is one of football’s most iconic arenas, it hosted the finals of FIFA World Cup in 2010, and three years later the Africa Cup of Nations.

Also the biggest Stadium in Africa with a capacity of a little over 94,700, the Soccer City or Calabash as it’s also known is in the news after tickets for an event in December sold out three hours after it went on sale.

Top 5 Largest Stadiums in Africa by Capacity:

FNB Stadium (94, 736) – Johannesburg

Misr Stadium (93,940) – New Administrative Capital

Borg el-Arab (86,000) – Alexandria

Stade de Martyrs de la Pentecôte (80,000) – Kinshasa

Kasarani Stadium (80,000) – Nairobi

The World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands saw a capacity of 84, 490, while the 2013 AFCON final that featured Nigeria and Burkina Faso recorded 85,000 fans.

Brizzy Take Over

R&B performer Chris Brown has made history after his tour scheduled for December 14 sold out, eclipsing the previous record held by Justin Bieber – his concert in 2013 at the FNB sold out many hours after tickets went on sale.

Due to popular demand for Brizzy’s show, an additional day was announced and tickets are already on sale.

Tour Dates
Saturday, 14 Dec 2024 – FNB Stadium, Johannesburg – SOLD OUT
Sunday, 15 Dec 2024 – FNB Stadium, Johannesburg – NEW DATE

Tickets for the second date went live on Friday, 4 October at 10am via Ticketmaster.

For context, the FNB or perhaps Mzansi is also a very hostile ground, as not many artists get shown that much love.

In September, Grammy Award winning artist Burna Boy was forced to postpone his show after poor ticket sales, according to multiple reports. That’s in spite of PSL club, Orlando Pirates handing out 250 tickets to fans, per Bonginkosi Tiwane (The Citizen).

“The reasons for the postponement were unclear. However, only Phase 1 of the ticket sales had sold out. These range from R765- R1,510.

“The phase 2 tickets, which are still are available range from R950 to R2,660. The pricier Platinum Package also remains available.”
