Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Idah Peterside has praised interim coach Austin Eguavoen for getting the best out of the Nigerian national team, contrasting his performance with that of former manager, José Peseiro.
Eguavoen, who took over days before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, led the Super Eagles to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and secured a 1-1 draw against Rwanda.
Peterside highlighted the team’s improved performances under Eguavoen, especially when compared to the struggles they faced under Peseiro.
“The team showed more attacking intent and fluidity under Eguavoen,” Peterside said in an interview with Channels TV.
“We scored three goals against Benin and kept a clean sheet. In Kigali, the goalkeeper was their hero – that shows we dominated and attacked.”
Peseiro had been widely criticized during his tenure despite guiding Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON.
His conservative tactics were a major point of contention, particularly in key matches, including a clash against South Africa. Peterside recalled Peseiro’s approach in those games.
“The South African coach even said he was surprised by Nigeria’s defensive strategy, especially with the quality of players like Iwobi, Osimhen, and Lookman. You can’t cage such players.”
In contrast, Peterside commended Eguavoen for allowing the players more freedom on the pitch.
“We have the best set of players in Africa, and Austin has given them the freedom to express themselves. The performances in Uyo and Kigali are evidence of that.”
He concluded by expressing optimism about the Super Eagles’ future under Eguavoen’s leadership. “When this team continues to build confidence like this, they will be absolutely unstoppable,” Peterside stated.
