The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revoked its approval for Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

According to CAF, technical problems, including an unsuitable playing field fueled this action.

This decision followed CAF’s assessment of the stadium after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Ghana and Angola, played on September 5, 2024.

CAF inspectors identified several issues at the stadium, which has a capacity of over 40,000.

The most critical problem was the condition of the playing field, which was deemed unsuitable for top-level matches due to uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover.

CAF had raised concerns before the game, pointing out persistent problems at the Baba Yara Stadium, as well as other venues in Ghana, including the Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium.

These issues have continued, prompting CAF to withdraw its approval for the Kumasi venue to host Category 3 international fixtures.

The decision leaves Ghana without any CAF-approved stadiums for upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

CAF has requested the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to find an alternative venue outside Ghana for the next matches.

The confederation board also recommended that the Ghanaian authorities conduct a full assessment of all international stadiums in the country and immediately begin refurbishment efforts.

CAF offered to assist by providing an international pitch consultant with experience in AFCON tournaments to guide the necessary improvements, with the GFA covering the costs.
