Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen has revealed that Victor Osimhen is not in the best condition to play a full 90 minutes.
The 25 year-old striker, who has yet to feature in club football this season, was called up for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Despite his lack of match fitness, Osimhen made appearances from the bench in both games, replacing Victor Boniface on each occasion.
He scored in the match against Benin Republic but was denied three times by the Rwanda goalkeeper during the encounter in Kigali.
Speaking after the game, Eguavoen addressed his Forward’s fitness, attributing it to a difficult summer that included a failed transfer to Chelsea and a fallout with his former club, Napoli.
“Osimhen is our brother, you can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. We know what he’s going through at Napoli.
“He just moved to Galatasaray and hasn’t been playing active football for a while now,” Eguavoen stated during the post-match interview.
The coach explained the need to manage Osimhen’s fitness carefully, explaining that playing him for a full 90 minutes could lead to injury.
“He played 25 minutes in the previous game, and today we had a word with him that he can’t play 90 minutes, or else he will get injured,” Eguavoen added.
