Nigeria remains at the summit of their Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying group, following Benin Republic’s dramatic 2-1 win over Libya in the second Group D clash on Tuesday night.
Earlier, Nigeria had played out a goalless draw against Rwanda, leaving the door open for Libya to potentially overtake them.
Libya needed to win by at least three clear goals to displace the Eagles from the top.
However, Benin’s comeback win ensured that Nigeria stayed in first place.
Libya struck first in the 9th minute with a penalty, coolly converted by Faisal Saleh.
However, Benin Republic fought back in the second half, leveling the score with a powerful shot from Steve Mounie.
The decisive moment came when Junior Olaitan converted a penalty, sealing the victory for Benin.
With this result, Nigeria remains in pole position in Group D, while Benin Republic moves into second place with three points.
Matchday 3 will take place next month, with Nigeria set to host Libya, and Benin Republic welcoming Rwanda.
Both fixtures are scheduled for October 7.
