Emmanuel Amuneke’s debut as coach of Heartland FC ended in disappointment as his team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Enyimba FC in their opening match of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The highly anticipated Oriental Derby took place on Sunday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.
Amuneke, who was recently appointed after missing out on the Super Eagles coaching job, was managing in Nigeria’s top-flight league for the first time.

It also marked his return to the dugout since 2021 when he worked as assistant coach in the Super Eagles.
Heartland took the lead early in the second half through Suraju Lawal, giving Amuneke a dream start.
However, Enyimba’s substitute Ifeanyi Ihemekwele equalized on his debut, scoring with his first touch in the 63rd minute.
Clinton Jephta then seized control for Enyimba, netting a brace with goals in the 70th and 77th minutes to secure the win for the visitors.
Enyimba’s strong second-half performance ensured they walked away with all three points, leaving Amuneke and his side to regroup ahead of their next fixture.
