Former Super Eagles defender, George Abbey has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s upcoming games in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, urging the team to step up and deliver results.

The three-time African champions had a tough time during their World Cup qualifiers in June, drawing 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.

Now, as they prepare to face Benin Republic again on September 7, the Super Eagles are keen to avoid another setback and seek revenge, Abbey has implored.

Speaking , Wednesday, on Brila FM’s “No Holds Barred” with Ifeanyi Udeze, the former Super Eagles teammates weighed in on Nigeria’s current situation in football.

Abbey insists that the team could no longer afford losing high profile games, and called on the players to be resolute in securing all three points against Benin Republic.

“For the Super Eagles players, if I’m in that camp, I’m looking at my teammates and we’re telling each other, ‘Listen, that will never happen again.”

“That was a one-off. Those who beat us in the World Cup qualifiers, they’re going to pay for the damage they did to us.

“We’re going to show them we’re a better team, with better players, playing at home, and we’re going to get the three points.”

He also stressed the need for discipline within the squad, highlighting the importance of a coach who commands respect and is supported by both the media and fans in making tough decisions to guide the team.

“These players need to realize that they’re playing for Nigeria, representing over 200 million people.

“Once you put on the national team shirt, you need to be ready to fight. If you’re not ready, step aside and let someone else take your place.”

He continued, “The players know their responsibility. They know what it will take for us to secure the required points. These two games are must-wins. Usually, you’d be satisfied with a win at home and a draw away, but not this time.

“We need six points from these two games. Regardless of who the coaching staff is; Austine Eguavoen is in charge now. we’re bringing Benin to our backyard in Uyo with our home fans behind us.”

Nigeria will face Benin Republic, on September 7, and then travel to Kigali three days later to play against Rwanda.
