World U20 Athletes: Team Nigeria Returns Without A Medal

Nigerian athletes concluded their campaign at the World U20 Athletics Championship in Peru, without securing a single medal, extending a disappointing streak following their struggles at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Hopes were briefly raised by Prestina Ochonogor, who reached the final of the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.28 meters.

However, she was unable to clinch a podium finish, just as Justina Eyakpobeyan missed out in the women’s 100m final, finishing seventh with a time of 11.63 seconds.

The story was similar for Ella Onojuvwevwo in the women’s 400m, who placed fifth with a time of 52.61 seconds, and Gafar Badmus, who failed to make it to the men’s 400m final after finishing fifth in his semi-final heat.

Additionally, Caleb Joshua was disqualified in the men’s 400m for a lane infringement despite initially finishing third in his heat.

Other Nigerian athletes, Oseiwe Salami and Taiwo Kudoro, also fell short ending seventh in their respective heats in the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles.
