Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali may find himself staying with Chippa United for the upcoming season, as no clubs have made a concrete move for the Nigerian.
Given his impressive performances at AFCON 2023, where the Super Eagles reached the final in February, one would have expected Nwabali to have secured a move by now.
His displays, especially during the tournament, where he emerged as a standout figure, had many believing he was the next big thing in Nigerian football.
Since the retirement of legendary goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, Nigeria has struggled to find a solid replacement, making Nwabali’s rise all the more significant.
Nwabali’s performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, particularly his crucial penalty saves during the semi-final shootout against South Africa, were key in propelling the Super Eagles to the final. Despite their 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast, Nwabali’s heroics left a lasting impression.
Nwabali exuded confidence, providing a reassuring presence at the back, which helped the defenders. His AFCON exploits put him on the radar of several clubs, and it seemed inevitable that he would leave Chippa United.
In fact, Chippa United’s goalkeeper coach, Sean Louw, had expected Nwabali to depart the club this summer, revealing that the keeper had received more than a dozen verbal offers.
“On physical hard copy paper, I don’t know how many offers he has received, but verbally, he has around 10 or even 12 offers. He is definitely not coming back to Chippa next season,” Louw said.
Even the Chippa United owner confirmed that the club was in discussions with clubs abroad, emphasizing that Nwabali deserved a bigger platform after his AFCON performance.
“We are talking to a few clubs abroad. We also believe that he needs something better, especially after the performance that he showed at the Afcon,” the owner stated.
Reports suggested interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, the Belgian league, and even England, with teams like Al-Ettifaq, Queens Park Rangers, and Union Saint-Gilloise all showing interest.
So, Why Has Nothing Materialized?
With just a month left before the start of the 2024/25 PSL season, Nwabali might have to stay at Chippa United due to the lack of concrete offers.
Chippa United assistant coach Thabo September confirmed that Nwabali has been training diligently with the team, despite the transfer speculations.
September admitted he was unaware of any firm offers for the former Enyimba shot-stopper, suggesting Nwabali was prepared to stay if the situation remained unchanged.
“He’s being a professional and training well, and if that [transfer] doesn’t happen, he’s looking forward to playing in the PSL for Chippa United. But me as a coach I don’t know if there’s anything on the table,” September told FARPost.
“I’m not going to be like everyone else and claim there’s something here or there. On my side, I don’t know of anything on the table. But all I want is good things for him. I want the best for Stanley because he deserves it; he has done well.”
