Rangers advanced to the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup with a 2-0 win over St Johnstone, thanks in part to a crucial goal from Cyriel Dessers.
After being benched following a disappointing performance against Dinamo Kyiv in midweek, Dessers made a decisive return to action.
With the game locked at 0-0, Rangers’ coach Phillipe Clement introduced the Nigerian striker, who quickly made his presence felt.
The breakthrough came when Rabbi Matondo set up Dessers, who tangled with St Johnstone defender Jack Sanders before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper.
Referee Matthew MacDermid initially appeared to have halted play for a foul, but Dessers continued, finishing with precision.
The goal was initially ruled out, sparking outrage among St Johnstone players who believed play had been stopped.
However, after a VAR review, the goal was awarded, much to the frustration of the St Johnstone side.
Rangers sealed their progression with a second goal, as McCausland’s deft chip over Josh Rae secured the 2-0 victory.
